Castle Orthopaedics in the News

At Castle Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, S.C., we believe that the practice of medicine includes a commitment to a lifetime of learning and continuous improvement in an effort to provide our patients with access to the latest proven technology and the best in orthopaedic care. One of the ways that we accomplish that goal is by attending various continuing education programs and another is by continuously subjecting ourselves and out practice to the scrutiny of various licensing and accrediting bodies. In the past, our physicians were the first in Aurora to routinely perform cementless (bone ingrowth) total hip replacement. We were the first in Aurora to perform minimally-invasive total hip and total knee surgery. We were the first to perform rotator cuff repairs arthroscopically. We were the first to bring a fellowship-trained spine surgeon (Dr. McGivney) to Aurora . We have the only fellowship-trained sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon in Aurora (Dr. Marciniak). We also have the only fellowship-trained shoulder and elbow surgeon (Dr. Saleem), who is also uniquely trained to perform sophisticated standard and reverse shoulder replacement surgery. We'd like to offer you some news on our recent accomplishments.

The National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses is dedicated to promoting the highest standards of nursing practice in orthopaedics through education, research, and effective communication. A number of our nurses are members of NAON. In May, 2005, two of our nurses, Judy Guy and Pat Darimont, attended NAON's annual Congress in Phoenix , Arizona , where they learned a great deal and brought much of it back to share with their nursing colleagues. We are proud of them and all of the others on out nursing ream who aspire to the highest standards of orthopaedic nursing practice.

Board Certification is a process whereby physicians are recognized by their peers for achieving the highest levels of professional expertise. All of our surgeons are board certified or board eligible. On June 23, 2005, Dr. Velagapudi was notified that he had successfully completed the requirements for recertification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. To complete the process required months of study and preparation culminating in a rigorous test of his knowledge and his skills. His certification will be effective until December 31, 2015, at which point he will have to do it all over again!

On August 5 and 6, 2005, Dr. McGivney attended a training course sponsored by the DePuy Spine/Link Corporation, makers of the CHARITE Disc Prosthesis. In this course physicians are trained in the surgical management of degenerative disc disease and chronic low back pain using motion sparing disc replacement surgery (see relative article in the magazine). As a result, Dr. McGivney is now certified to perform disc replacement surgery using the CHARITE Disc Prosthesis as required by the FDA.

When we built our primary office facility and surgicenter in 2002, we installed a state-of-the-art Toshiba Opart open MRI unit. After out MRI's are completed the images are sent electronically across the country to California where they are read by come of the country's best orthopaedic MRI radiologists. These same radiologists are also the MRI experts for the U.S. Olympic teams and various professional and college athletic teams. Recently we voluntarily requested that our MRI facility be inspected by experts from the American College of Radiology for the purpose of accreditation. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field to assess the qualifications of the personnel and the quality of the MRI facility. We are pleased to announce that as a result of that inspection our MRI facility has been awarded a 3-year term of accreditation by the ACR. Our MRI facility is the only facility in Aurora to have earned that accreditation!

We are pleased to announce that in November, 2005, we welcomed Robert D. Paras, M.D., to Castle. Dr. Paras is not an orthopaedic surgeon, but rather has completed his residency in Family Practice with a subsequent fellowship in Primary Practice with a subsequent fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine. He is Board Certified in both Family Practice and Primary Care Sports Medicine. He has been the Medical Director of Athletic Training and the Team Physician at Aurora University since 2000 and the Team Physician at Yorkville High School since 1999. He will provide a unique expertise for a wide variety of orthopaedic and athletic injuries and problems not requiring surgical treatment.
